Stereophonics, Shepherds Bush Empire, London
By Chris Mugan for The Independent

You would think Kelly Jones would have to more to say at his first gigs in a year, yet, true to form, half an hour passes before he can muster a simple “Here’s one for ya.”

Then again, his connection with Stereophonics fans lies deeper than mere repartee. They have come out in force for a three-night stint here that represents something of a Christmas gift, given that the foursome have been off the radar for most of 2011.

Jones surfaced recently to record a tribute to Wales’ deceased national football team manager Gary Speed, a take on ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ that has been received more positively than his band’s last album, 2009’s solid if uncompelling Keep Calm And Carry On – their first since the band’s debut not to top the UK charts. Currently between labels, to coin a phrase, the band have otherwise been shaping new material both in Brussels and at their new studio round the corner.

No sign of that tonight, as Jones’ guttural howl comfortably fills the venue, the band content to chug away anonymously beside him, apart from the odd perfunctory solo from guitarist Adam Zindani. The singer’s bellowing delivery links the many genres Stereophonics have adopted over nearly two decades, from plodding acoustic ballads to full-on headbangers. Mainly, they rely on trusted indie rock, usually reduced to straightforward terrace chants that even Noel Gallagher would find gamine. The crowd, though, lap them up, in full voice from the second number, forceful early single ‘A Thousand Trees’, and continuing even through such rousing obscurities as ‘Last Of The Big Time Drinkers’.

Over an hour and three quarters, there are plenty of moments when the band show their limitations. They fail to disguise Jones’ clumsy, petty sniping on the likes of ‘Superman’ and ‘Mr Writer’ (admittedly a catchy tune). More grating still is the banal picture postcard of ‘Have A Nice Day’. Still, Jones has regularly shown a sure demotic touch over the years, best appreciated in those anthems for the disaffected ‘Pick A Part That’s New’ and ‘Just Looking’. There are, though, two clear highlights: the sharp-focused depiction of small town grief in ‘Local Boy In A Photograph’ and the surging ‘Dakota’, its glittering melody shining through despite tonight’s grungy guitars and thunderous drums. The audience’s contribution is about the loudest I have heard here or at any London venue.

As people across Wales make their final preparations for the big day, we asked Welsh stars from the worlds of music, stage, screen and more how they were planning to spend Christmas Day – and what they wanted in their stockings…

Cwmaman singer-songwriter Kelly Jones, 37, lead singer with the Stereophonics, said he would be spending the festive season with his family including girlfriend Jakki and his two daughters.

He said: “This year I will be in London having Christmas with Jakki Bootsy and Misty, ripping presents open and eating turkey.

“We’ll be watching Home Alone, It’s a Wonderful Life and Toy Story, drinking red wine and eating chocolates.

“Ho ho ho.”

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones could find his tribute to Gary Speed the Christmas No.1 if Wales fans have their way
From WalesOnline by Simon Gaskell

STEREOPHONICS frontman Kelly Jones may be in Brussels recording the band’s next album but he could find himself at the UK’s Christmas number one spot if fans of his tribute to Gary Speed have their way.

Jones’ acoustic version of the Andy Williams classic Can’t Take My Eyes Off You formed part of a BBC tribute to the tragic Wales coach before then being used at Speed’s funeral on Friday.

The song was poignant because it became an adopted anthem of Welsh football during the 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign – when Wales narrowly missed out on a place in the tournament.

Fans have embraced Jones’ version of the song so much that it is now being touted for release into the charts and on download with the idea being that any proceeds raised from sales would go to charity.

Half a dozen Facebook groups petitioning for the song to be released as a single have been set up while on Twitter the movement is even stronger with hundreds of people asking for it to happen.

One user called Josh Hughes said: “#RIPGary Speed really hope Kelly Jones tribute song gets to number one for Gary Speed.” Another called Dafydd Evans tweeted: “Kelly Jones tribute song for Gary Speed… not sure if he’s released it as a single though! but he should!”

And when Premier League footballer Joey Barton pledged his support for a separate single sung by a military wives choir he was swamped by tweets suggesting Jones should also release his similarly charitable song.

When Wales on Sunday contacted Jones’ management they refused to be drawn on whether the song would be put out.

But Jones – an avid fan of Leeds United, who Speed won the league title with under manager Howard Wilkinson in the early ’90s – did admit he was honoured to have made the tribute.

He said: “I was with my two daughters at the Millennium Stadium after the Wales v England international. We were waiting at the lift and Gary ended his phone conversation and shook my hand.

“We had a chat about the game and shared the lift to the ground floor. He was a very nice man. Good-looking fella.

“I was consumed the whole day when I heard the news. I couldn’t get my head around it.

“Then the BBC approached me to record the song. It’s a 10-minute job but I hope it’s fitting for the tribute on the show.”

Meanwhile Jones has shown his support for grass roots causes after also revealing that a percentage of the band’s fee from upcoming shows at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire will go to fund hometown club FC Cwmaman’s costs next season.

“We really didn’t want to cheese anyone off back home by not playing any Welsh dates – or anyone in Scotland and Ireland for that matter,” he said.

“But when we originally booked the gigs we did so on the basis that the venue was just a 100 yard walk from our new Stereophonics HQ, so if we were still in the middle of making the record we could just pop in and out without causing too much disruption.”

Prior to those shows, the Stereophonics had enjoyed a hiatus from live gigs for the first time in nearly 15 years.

“I’ve just been utilising my time a lot better, and it’s surprising how much you can get done when you’re not rushing around airports or hanging about in hotel rooms, all the nonsense that comes with life on the road,” he said.

“It’s been strange, mind, getting into a new routine but I’ve been loving it – that said, it doesn’t feel so great when my daughters come and wake me up at stupid o’clock by using my bed as a trampoline.

“But then I’ll make them breakfast, calm them down and take them to school before spending the day in the studio.”

LEGENDARY rocker Rod Stewart believes Kelly Jones would be the perfect choice of frontman should the Faces ever reunite again.

The singer, who shot to fame with Ronnie Wood’s raucous rockers in the ’70s, said the Stereophonics star would make an excellent stand-in for his gravel-throated delivery having already topped the charts covering his 1970 hit Handbags And Gladrags.

“Kelly’s a good little shouter, although not quite as good as me, mind you,” laughs the 66-year-old.

Mick Hucknall was the widely-questioned choice for lead vocalist for the Faces’ original comeback last year.

“In fairness, I thought Mick did a good job, the only problem being that they played all the songs in the same keys as we recorded them 40 years ago. Mick was struggling to get up there and even I can’t get to those high notes anymore,” adds Rod over the phone from New York where he was about to play the formidable Madison Square Garden.

“But Kelly’s a good buddy of Ronnie’s and he could have nailed that range easily – but I doubt they could have afforded him,” he says, explaining that the only reason he didn’t show up for the gigs himself was because of a scheduling problem.

Not that there much chance of that anymore what with becoming a dad again for the eighth time a mere seven weeks ago, third wife Penny Lancaster giving birth to baby boy Aiden – their second together – in February.

Is it a struggle then to be on tour with a his new family in tow?

“It seemed like Aiden woke up every hour on the hour last night, and Penny – God bless her, – was up and down the whole time feeding and changing him. That said, I’d happily sacrifice sleep just to see that little face in the morning. It’s a truly wonderful sight,” says the rocker.

And what can fans expect to hear fron Rod when he returns to Swansea’s Liberty Stadium in June?

“Everything they want to hear and more. No stuff of my American Song Book albums though – I played one the other night in Boston and it fell flat on its face.”

So, rather than Rod’s interpretation of classic standards and ballads, it’ll be all the hits from Baby Jane and Sailin’ to Maggie May and Mandolin Wind.

“Oh yeah, we’ll be knocking it out in Swansea, don’t worry,” says Rod.

To see Rod at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea on June 1 call 0844 209 7324.

Glory days: Ian Rush at Liverpool

Who is your sporting hero ?

I supported Everton when I was young so it was Bob Latchford, but my all-time heroes are Pele and Bjorn Borg.

What would you be if you weren’t a sportsman?

It would definitely have been something outdoors. Maybe a PE teacher.

Which other sportsman would you like to be?

Roger Federer. He’s the best tennis player I’ve ever seen.

Career highlight?

Winning the 1986 FA Cup final. Liverpool won the League the week before and I’d dreamed about scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final as a kid – and to do that, against Everton and to win the Double, it was just everything rolled into one.

… and the worst moment?

Wales not qualifying for a major tournament is my biggest regret, particularly when we didn’t do it against Romania (losing 2-1 in November 1993) and didn’t go to the USA World Cup.

Dream come true: Rush celebrates scoring in the 1986 FA Cup final

If your house was burning down, what one possession would you save?

If my family – my wife and two boys, who are 21 and 18 – weren’t in there, it would be my trophy cabinet.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

My dad always told me: ‘Be confident and believe in what you can do.’ You need the confidence to go out there and do it.

Favourite karaoke song?

The only one I’ve done is a Liverpool song, Poor Scouser Tommy. I don’t even try to sing You’ll Never Walk Alone. I’m Welsh but I’m not the best singer.

Three most-listened to songs on your ipod?

I like the Stereophonics. I know the lead singer, Kelly Jones, and there’s the Welsh connection.

Last film you saw?

The King’s Speech. I get to travel a lot now so I watch films on planes.

Last book you read?

Kenny Dalglish’s autobiography. My favourite is Richard Branson’s Losing My Virginity. It gives you inspiration.

Favourite Pre-match meal?

Chicken and pasta.

Can you cook? Best dish?

The only thing I can cook is Welsh rarebit.

Favourite holiday destination?

I’ve got a place in Portugal, which I like very much, but I’ve just been working in Malaysia for five weeks. My family had a chance to come over and we really loved it, particularly the island of Pangkor.

In a film of your life, who would you like to play you?

Dustin Hoffman. We’re the same age.

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?

I had a black Porsche when I was a player (a red one would be too obvious!).

Tell us a secret…

I was so shy when I was younger. When I first went to Liverpool I didn’t say a word for a year.

Ian Rush was talking at the launch of the new Hyundai ‘Boot Shoot’ App available from i-Tunes. For more info go to www.facebook.com/HyundaiUK

SALES of The Stand’s record I’ll Be There (With My Little Pick and Shovel) have raised £2,000 for the Fred Keenor Statue Fund.

Merthyr actor Jonathan Owen says more cash is due when proceeds from download sales are counted.

Jonny and Super Furry Animals guitarist Guto Pryce and Owen Powell, of Catatonia fame, were joined by drummers Ryan Richards and Gareth Lawrence, from Welsh bands Funeral for a Friend and Blackout, to record a version of the terrace favourite.

Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable, who had been a driving force for the fundraiser, tragically died before the song was recorded.

The £2,000 means the fund has passed the halfway target. More than £44,000 has now been raised towards the £85,000 tribute to the Wales skipper and the captain of Cardiff City’s 1927 FA Cup winning team.

Jonny Owen said: “We’re absolutely delighted to help the fund in any way.

“We’ll keep helping with all money raising aspects and again would like to say that the people involved in the fund continue to inspire us with their Herculean effort in trying to get it erected at our ground.”

Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust will be collecting before the Wales v England game at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

Music I Want my Children to Listen to: Stereophonics

Continuing my theme of flying the Welsh flag (Manic Street Preachers a few weeks ago, it’ll be Catatonia, Duffy and Martin Joseph next!) I am choosing one of my favourite ‘Cool Cymru’ bands to listen to. They are especially good on a sunny Spring or Summer day, with the windows down and when everything is right with the world!

The Stereophonics really remind me of being in university and discovering my identity as a young adult. I did my teaching degree in Newport and there were quite a few people either from Cwmamon (the ‘Phonics home-town) or a nearby village. There was a real sense of local pride in the local boys that were ‘doing good’.

The music that they released in their first few albums is my preference, although I’m partial to any of it; I adore Kelly Jones’ husky and soulful voice. What was surprising about their debut album, Word Gets Around, was that although it instantly charted at number six, the three main songs from it that are now probably some of their most famous failed to reach the top twenty in the charts: Local Boy in the Photograph, More Life in a Tramps Vest and A Thousand Trees. The ‘Phonics became more popular and successful in the charts with the release of Performance and Cocktails, and its raucous The Bartender and the Thief. As far as I am aware, their only number one has been 2005?s Dakota.

I’ve seen them in a number of venues, the last time was in Cardiff, and I’ll confess to thinking that Kelly Jones looked like he’d sold out. We didn’t stay for the encore, both feeling a little disappointed. I’ve wiped it from my mind really, preferring to remember them in their prime of the early 2000s.

On that note, I shall leave you with my personal favourite:

By Shaun Greaney

THE devastated mum of a Llanelli car plant worker who died after he was struck by a forklift truck have spoken of her heartache at the tragedy.

Father-of-two Darren Small, 35, of Loughor, died nearly three years ago after the incident at Calsonic Kansei.

The company has pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching health and safety law.

It will be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court on Friday — three years and one day after the tragedy.

Mr Small left two children, Ashley, now 14, and Natasha, now 13.

Darren’s mother, Barbara, of Brynymor Road, Gowerton, and her family have been living with the grief they have suffered ever since the tragedy.

Barbara said: “It’s like as if it was yesterday.

“It’s horrendous. The children are really struggling as well. I’m on medication through the stress. I have a bad problem with my heart through the stress — I was fine before.

“It’s very difficult for us.

“My daughter, Kelly, and her partner split up over it. She was in such a state herself.

“Myself, if Darren’s favourite band, The Stereophonics, come on the radio, I’m bawling my head off.

“It’s terrible for Darren’s children.”

Calsonic Kansei is to be sentenced after a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive following the death of Mr Small.

He suffered significant head injuries in the accident on March 17, 2008.

He was airlifted to Morriston Hospital after the incident where he died three days later — the day he was due to finish work to spend more time with his family. Barbara said: “Darren loved his family. He was due to finish, taking voluntary redundancy.

“He was a lovely boy. He was so caring. He lived for his children. He wanted to be with his kids.

“He used to do everything for us, because my husband is registered disabled he would do everything for ourselves and his sister.”

The family have used the Irish patron saint’s day to celebrate the life of Darren since the tragedy.

“We always get together to remember him.

“We meet in a pub and have a drink for him. All his mates come and some of the boys from work. It’s a celebration of his life.”

Mrs Small says she has endured considerable heartache in the three years she has been waiting for justice.

“I would hate any other family to go through what we went through,” she said. “It has completely devastated our lives.”

A spokesman for Calsonic Kansei UK said: “Darren was a valued and well-liked member of staff and his loss has been devastating to all involved.

“The company continues to extend its deepest sympathies and concern to his family.”

In November Calsonic admitted two breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act at Ammanford Magistrates’ Court.

The company will appear before Swansea Crown Court on Friday for a sentencing hearing

Welsh rock heroes Funeral For A Friend are back with a new lineup and a thrillingly back-to-basics direction on their hotly anticipated fifth album Welcome Home Armageddon, so Sport.co.uk caught up with drummer Ryan Richards to discuss the record, the band’s rabid fanbase, his beloved Cardiff City FC and his involvement in the recording of Bluebirds standard ‘I’ll be There (With My Little Pick and Shovel)’, the proceeds of which shall go towards the Fred Keenor statue appeal fund…

Tell us about the Fred Keenor statue fund and what it means to you…

Fred was basically the most famous Cardiff City player of all time. He was captain of the 1927 FA Cup-winning side and a Welshman as well. That would have cemented him in Cardiff folklore anyway but the fact that he went away to war, actually got shot and injured, then came back into the team to lift the FA Cup – that’s a pretty amazing feat for a human being, let alone a footballer. He’s a great inspiration and that’s where it all started, really. We did the song up in Monnow Valley in Wales and, originally, another Cardiff City fan sadly departed – Stuart Cable [former Stereophonics drummer] – was meant to play on that but, after he passed away, the other guys on the project wanted to keep it going as much for Stuart’s memory as for the club or the Fred Keenor statue. The guys knew I was a Cardiff fan and a friend of Stuart so they asked me to step in, which was a great honour.

One of the things about Stuart was that, even if you only met him a few times, he’d make you feel like you were his best mate. He had that quality. I got to meet Stuart quite a few times over the years and he was definitely a big inspiration for me growing up as a drummer in the South Wales area.

Onto Cardiff present. In the last two seasons, you’ve missed out on promotion in rather painful circumstances.

(Laughs) Very painful!

Would losing out on an automatic spot to Swansea be the worst of the worst?

It would be if we also lost in the play-off final again. That would be massively unbearable, the worst thing possible. On the other side of the coin though – and I might be different to other Cardiff fans in saying this – my ideal scenario would be for both Cardiff and Swansea to go up, us as champions and them in 2nd. I think it would be great to take the South Wales derby to the Premiership. It would be a fitting place for that spectacle.

The media would have a field day with two Welsh teams in the top flight – “England vs Wales” every week and so on…

Oh, it would be incredible! I’d love it. Obviously first and foremost I want Cardiff to go up but it would be great for Welsh football if they both did. I’d hope it would have a beneficial knock-on effect on the Welsh national side as it could give more encouragement to youngsters in Wales to start playing football, which would mean a lot for the scouting and development systems in Swansea and Cardiff.

If you don’t make it up this season, do you think Dave Jones’ position would be under threat?

I think he’s doing a good job but he may have made a rod for his own back by saying this is the strongest team he’s had there. It’s probably the strongest team that Cardiff’s ever had so yeah it could be difficult for him [if he doesn’t get them promoted]. I think he’s probably been the best manager Cardiff have ever had; he’s taken us to Wembley twice and within touching distance of the Premiership a couple of times, so it would be a real shame if he doesn’t take us up with the squad that we’ve got. With the outlay and ambition that they have, I think the owners are expecting and wanting Premiership football.

How did Aaron Ramsey look to you during his all-too-brief return?

Incredible, to be honest. Absolute class. In the first game he came back, there were glimpses; you could tell he was dipping his toe back in the water, so to speak, but from the Swansea game onwards he was just a different class. It’s a shame we haven’t got him longer but it’s encouraging as a supporter of the Welsh national team to know that he’s with us for the duration. I think he’s going to turn into a world class player, I really do, and from what I saw it looks as if he’ll get back to his best after the injury he had.

Do you think Jay Bothroyd’s early season form was a flash in the pan?

I hope not. At the beginning of the season, he just looked like a different player, like he was getting his head down and reaching his potential. I don’t think the England call-up helped us and maybe he’s been thinking about other clubs but it’s probably more to do with the injury he had. He’s still a quality player on the ball, especially at this level, but we’re going to need him to be back at his best from now until the end of the season or it’s going to be difficult because there are so many strong sides competing around us.

Who are your top five favourite Bluebirds?

I’d say Ramsey because I think he could go on to be the best player that’s ever played for Cardiff, I really do believe that. ‘Earnie’, Rob Earnshaw, because he was great for us, scored a mountain of goals and has always shown a lot of respect for the club since he left, even as recently as a few weeks ago when he scored the winner against us for Nottingham Forest and refused to celebrate. I think that’s left him in high regards amongst Cardiff fans. I’d have to say Fred Keenor because of the reasons I gave earlier. Nathan Blake, certainly; I’ll just never forget him scoring the goal against Man City in the cup, that was an incredible victory. If I had to pick one other…(deliberates)…yeah, Kevin McNaughton’s a big favourite of mine; we’ve had our problems in defence but he always seems to be the calm head steadying the ship and I think he’s one of the most consistent players we have, a great player.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYku0Dl9m7c[/youtube]

‘Sixteen’, from the new album

Onto matters Funeral For A Friend. How do you feel the new lineup has impacted upon the way the band works? Do you feel revitalised?

Absolutely yeah, one hundred per cent. It doesn’t feel alien because it’s the third band I’ve been in with Gavin and Richard, the two new members of the band, so it’s been a really easy transition and it’s freshened things up. Maybe it’s similar to football in that sense; when you make a new signing, it just revitalises everyone, adds that energy to the camp and that’s what it’s done.

The album title, as well as at least two of its tracks, refers to the apocalypse. Is this a theme that runs through the whole record?

It kind of is but it didn’t start out that way. The song ‘Welcome Home Armageddon’ came before the record and we just really liked something about that phrase; it caught our imagination and just seemed to fit somehow. It went on from there, really. When we gave the title to the artwork designer we’ve been working with on the record [Rianne Rowlands], she came back with this great imagery and that pushed things further and gave us a solid direction. Sometimes with a record, you write one song and it sets the tone for the rest of the record.

Could Cardiff City getting promoted be one of the harbingers of doom?

(Laughs) Yeah, maybe. It would be a nice way for me to go out, really. I’d be happy enough to explode at Wembley, I suppose. But it’d be nice for promotion to happen on our own doorstep. It’s not going to happen now but it’d have been nice to have won the league or promotion at Swansea. When Bellamy scored that goal at Swansea, it was the best feeling but it would have been even better if it had been the last day of the season and it had taken us up. As you say, it could well be one of the harbingers of doom but I’d go out with a smile on my face!

You have a really rather rabid fanbase. As such, have you had any particularly weird or frightening experiences involving fans?

You do get some, shall we say, ‘over-enthusiastic’ fans sometimes. I certainly remember one who fashioned some sort of voodoo doll of our old guitarist. I believe it was a giraffe that had been adapted to have the hairstyle of our old guitarist and the fan in question had tried to give this to him at the show but couldn’t find him. We were out walking to the bus after the show and she sped past in her car, almost running him over, and then deserted her car in the middle of the road while presenting this possibly cursed giraffe to him. So yeah, that was nice. There haven’t been too many crazy ones for me; our old guitarist Darran used to attract the more, shall we say, ‘eccentric’ fans, so maybe he’s at home right now with a house full of eccentric gifts!

I read an interview with you in which you said that you took a lot of inspiration from the temporary dip and subsequent return to form of Deftones. Do they know that you described them in this interview as having been – and I quote – “bloated, sloppy and demotivated”?

(Laughs) Do you know what, I think they’d agree. I read interviews with them where, without quite using my words, they said things along the same lines, that they’d lost the plot and let themselves go in every sense. I was quite disappointed as a fan to see that and it was a wakeup call. Like I said, when they brought out the Diamond Eyes record, I absolutely loved it and thought it was the best thing they’d ever done, and I don’t say that lightly. I’m a big Deftones fan, I watched their first ever UK gig over ten years ago. I saw the pictures [promo pics for Diamond Eyes] and I thought they were looking slim, healthy and motivated and, for me, it didn’t appear to be a coincidence that both of those things went hand in hand. It was a real eye-opener for me; I looked at myself and did the same sort of thing, got back into training and working out and everything like that, and I lost nearly three stone myself. I took it on board, really, and I hope they wouldn’t mind too much me saying how inspired I was by their turnaround.

I could be wrong about this but, from that interview, it looked like there are aspects of your back catalogue with which you’re not entirely satisfied now. Is that the case?

I think it’s a case of it not being so black and white as saying “I don’t like Tales Don’t Tell Themselves” because I do, I really like it, but my opinion is that it wasn’t right for us. As a listener, I think it’s a great record but it doesn’t feel for me like a Funeral For A Friend record, it doesn’t quite fit in the archives of what we do. It feels like we went off on a really big tangent and, retrospectively, I think it would have been cool maybe to have done that as some sort of side project, named ourselves something different, as bands sometimes do. That’s not me saying that I don’t like it but, in the whole scheme of the Funeral For A Friend journey, it’s a little bit of a bump in the road.

Fans of bands have a tendency to pine for ‘the old stuff’. From what I’ve been reading about the new record, it’s a return to the kind of aggression of the first few albums. Do you ever feel that the direction you take musically is influenced by what the fans want from you?

Well, when we started, we didn’t have any fans so it was easy to do whatever. We wrote our first album that way and people loved that. When it got to the second record, there were a lot of people coming out then who sounded just like us so I guess we changed things a little bit on the second record, made it more raw and slightly back-to-basics. When we got to the Tales… record, I guess it was a rebellion; we didn’t want to be in that scene anymore, we were sick of the bands in that scene, we didn’t like any of them and didn’t want to be included with them, so I guess we rebelled and did the complete opposite of what was expected of us. That’s why the record turned out as it did but, with this album, it was a case of being truer and keeping it just amongst the five of us. In this day and age it’s probably quite unheard of – and it’s the first time we’ve ever done it – but we completely wrote and recorded the record ourselves and no-one from the record label or management had actually heard it until it was there, finished, on the desk. This is the record, here you go!

It’s always been very different for us, a case of sending demos through and the label saying “you need to do this many more songs” or the producer saying “let’s use this one”; we never had any of that this time so it’s a very honest representation of us. A lot of the writing came from, like you said, people asking for your old stuff. We purposefully set out to write a record which would make them not want to ask for those old records any more, that we’d be giving them better than that and they’d be asking for the new ones. That’s how it’s turned out and it’s a great turnaround to have people asking you to play your new stuff and requesting brand new songs. It’s more fun for us that way and it feels a lot fresher.

Are there any particular studio tricks that you use to create your drum sound, or does it vary from album to album, perhaps even song to song?

I find the best trick, if you will, is to choose the right room. That’s the most important thing for me. There’s a lot of studio trickery you can use to get certain sounds but I’ve never liked that sampled, synthetic type of sound, I’ve always liked really big, open, live sounding drums on the records I’ve played on. For this record, we went to an amazing studio in Monnow Valley in Wales to do the drums and the room there is second to none in the world, really. It’s an incredible recording room and that’s the most important thing, really; well, second to having a great sounding set of drums, of course. Yeah, just getting the right room and really catching that vibe and ambience.

Who are your favourite drummers?

I guess it would vary through the years. The person that got me into drumming in the first place would have been Roger Taylor from Queen. My dad is a very big Queen fan and, when I was growing up, any time we went for a trip in the car or for a drive, Queen would be on. Such great rhythms and I think probably, for most drummers, the first beat that they learned would have been ‘We Will Rock You’; tom, tom, snare and you’re there, you’re a drummer, you’ve played your first beat! I guess that’s how it was for me and, for me, it [the beat from ‘We Will Rock You’] just summed up what drumming is all about: it can be as simple or as technical as you want it to be, there’s no right or wrong, no saying that if something’s more technical then it’s better. That’s a legendary drumbeat but it’s one that probably ninety-nine per cent of the population could play; but they didn’t come up with it, he did, and that’s what was so great about it for me.

Does the band have any plans to release an acoustic album at any point in the future?

You know what, that’s a good shout, actually. It’s something we have been talking about. It’s one of those things we’ve always wanted to do but never found the time. But yeah, that’s going to happen soon, I would think. The way technology is now, it’s really easy for us to record it ourselves if we wanted to. We’ve got a small home setup which we record all our demos on so it would be really easy to come up with that, I think. Yeah, that would be good, I’d love to do that.

Finally, could you name – as of this very moment – your top three albums of all time?

As we’re talking about Queen, I’ll go with A Night at the Opera. (Pause) My word, my mind’s gone blank. I gave a top ten the other day, actually. I’d say…Appetite for Destruction by Guns N’ Roses because that’s one that took me onto the next level of music, really, a little bit harsher. I guess the next step from that was The Black Album by Metallica, it took it a step further and got me into the music that got me into being in a band, I suppose. So yeah, let’s go for those.

The welshman has been pitching ideas for music shows to TV execs.

One idea he’s working on is a show with live music performances giving him a chance to use his contacts in the business.
