Fans line route for Stuart Cable’s funeral

Stuart CableFans of the late rock drummer Stuart Cable were expected to line the streets of his home town ahead of his funeral.

The service at St Elvan’s Church in Aberdare, Cynon valley, at 1200 BST is private but a loud speaker is allowing those outside to hear the service.

But the family of the former Stereophonics member invited those wishing to pay their last respects to line the funeral procession route.

Mayor Simon Lloyd said Cable was a star who “kept his home in his heart”.

‘Sad day’
Road closures are in place when required from 1100 to 1345 BST to allow the cortege, which will include a horse-drawn carriage, to travel from the chapel of rest in nearby Trecynon to the church and then onto a private cremation.

He had presented his weekly BBC Radio Wales rock show on the previous Saturday evening. Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf council, Simon Lloyd, who is attending the funeral, said: “Monday will be a sad day as we say our final farewells and pay respects to Stuart, who has always held the valleys close to his heart, even when he attained the success he did in his life.”

Mr Lloyd added: “He will be remembered for the pride he installed in people and the inspiration he gave them, as a boy from Cynon Valley who became an international star, but still kept his home in his heart.”

Gary Marsh, editor of the Cynon Valley Leader newspaper, who is acting as a spokesman for the Cable family, said the funeral and cremation was private for family, friends and guests, along with locals from Cable’s home village Cwmaman.

But he said the family understood that fans would want to pay their last respects and could do so by gathering in the town centre and along the route to the church for a ‘Celebration of the Life of Stuart Cable’.

Cable, who left Stereophonics in 2003, went on to forge a career as a TV and radio presenter and had set up a new band called Killing For Company.

Police have said it may take weeks before the cause of the drummer’s death is established.

A post mortem examination was carried out at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, about two weeks ago.

But South Wales Police said the cause of death will not be known until toxicology tests are completed.

Officers previously said they were not speculating on the cause of death but there were no suspicious circumstances.
There are family flowers only at the funeral with well-wishers asked to make donations instead in his memory to the Stuart Cable Charity Organisation.

The council said High Street and Rock Grounds car parks would be closed as they will be used for the funeral.
A spokesman said: “Those who do not urgently need to be in town are advised to avoid the area but if attendance in Aberdare is essential please bear in mind that it will be busy and to leave extra time for travelling and parking”.
